tar sands and EROI

1) Which energy source should we extract and use first, oil shale or tar sands?  Why?

We should extract the tar sands first before oil shade. Because tar sands have a higher EROI.

 2) Describe one similarity between the process used to get oil from tar sands and the process used to get oil from oil shale.

One similarity between the process used to get oil from tar sands and the process to get oil from oil shale is drilling, they both use digging in order to complete their procedures.

 3) Describe one key difference between the process used to get oil from tar sands and the process used to get oil from oil shale.

One difference between the process used to for oil shale and tar sands is oil shale creates crude oil and natural gas while that created in tar sands the bitumen must be refined into usable oil.

 4) Explain, in terms of EROI, why the author believes "off-shore oil drilling may be a smart way to actually reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the long run".

In off-shore drilling there is a higher EROI and you get more oil and use less fossil fuels to obtain. So in the long run we will produce more oil w/o the use of a lot of fossil fuels and oil to receive it. Which causes a lower rate of carbon dioxide pollution, affecting the environment.

 5) Use EROI/Best First Principle to explain one decision that you have made in your day-to-day life.  This could literally be anything, but I am looking for new examples other than the energy resources we have been studying.  In other words, you should provide an example of how EROI influenced a decision at your individual level rather than the societal level.

When working on my math studies homework I do the easiest questions first and then do the harder ones because I have more experience doing the easier ones. I get more work done doing easier first then the hard.

  1. Nice work! The similarity in extracting tar sands and oil shale is that they both require the addition of heat which contributes to their relatively low EROIs.
